A chart title or data label can be linked to a worksheet cell. Microsoft explains that editing the source cell keeps the connection, while editing the linked text directly on the chart can break it. The displayed wording may then stop following later source changes.

Choose the editing location according to whether the text should remain dynamic. Direct chart editing supports different formatting choices but changes the relationship with the worksheet. Check a linked title after updating its source and reestablish the link when necessary before using the chart in a recurring report.
