Excel can continue a numerical series using either a repeated addition or a repeated multiplication. A linear trend adds a step value, while a growth trend multiplies by a factor. Select at least two starting cells to establish the pattern before extending the series with the fill handle.

The Fill Series controls provide another way to specify how values should continue. Check the generated results against the intended progression, particularly when switching between additive and multiplicative behavior. These tools extrapolate the selected mathematical pattern; they do not independently establish whether real-world demand, revenue or another measured variable will follow it.
