Use the separate jobs of INDEX and MATCH

VLOOKUP expects the searched column to sit to the left of the returned information. The source presents INDEX and MATCH as an alternative when that arrangement does not fit the worksheet. MATCH identifies a position from a value, while INDEX retrieves a value from a position. Together they can search one area and return the corresponding information from another without forcing the table into a left-to-right lookup layout.

Check the connection between the ranges

The lookup range and return range must describe corresponding records for the position to be meaningful. Review the references and matching option before relying on the result. Start with a known entry and confirm that the expected value comes back. This makes it easier to distinguish a formula problem from inconsistent source data. The advantage is a flexible relationship between ranges, not permission to combine unrelated sections of a workbook.
